Elderly fire victims leave hospital

Advertiser Staff

An 85-year-old man who was injured along with his 85-year-old wife in a Wai'alae house fire on Monday has been released from the Queen's Medical Center, a hospital official said.

Harry Akamine left yesterday, while his wife, Shizue Akamine, remained in fair condition today, the hospital official said.

A space heater is suspected of igniting a blanket or combustible object, a fire official said. The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the home.

Fire officials said Harry Akamine saved his wife by pushing her down the staircase and out of the house after the fire broke out.
