Man killed today in Waialua crash

Advertiser Staff

A man was killed today in a single-car crash in Waialua that caused police to close Kaukonahua Road in both directions for several hours.

Police said the crash happened about 3:50 a.m. when a Honda Civic traveling north on Kaukonahua Road crashed into a street light. The crash scene was about one mile south of Thomson Corner, police said.

Police closed Kaukonahua Road in both directions between Wilikina Drive and Kamananui Road to investigate the crash.

The driver, who had to be removed from the car by firefighters, was flown to Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He died at the hospital at 5:54 a.m., a hospital spokeswoman said.

Police said speed does appear to be involved in the crash, but did not know yet if alcohol was involved. Police also said they did not know if the driver was wearing a seat belt. The driver has not been identified, police said.
