Lei expert Brian Choy wins overall award

Brian Choy, a frequent winner of the Honolulu Lei Making Contest, scored again as the overall winner of the city's annual lei competition today at Kapiolani Park.

Choy won the Mayor's Grand Prize and four other first-place awards in different color lei categories.

Other winners of multiple awards include Bill Char, Happy Tamanaha, Muriel Kaya, Norberto Cabugon, Jr. and Randy Akau.

Nearly 100 lei were entered in this year's lei contest. They will go on display tomorrow on the grass at the Mauna'ala, 2261 Nuuanu Ave., where members of the Hawaiian royalty are buried.

A short ceremony is scheduled at 9 a.m.
