First lady Vicky Cayetano, schools superintendent Paul LeMahieu and University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones are chairing Kids Day 2001, set for May 8.
A host of community notables, largely from the broadcast media and entertainment fields, will join other volunteers in selling special editions of The Honolulu Advertiser to benefit Parents and Children Together (PACT). The annual program is a joint promotion with The Advertiser, the state Department of Education and the Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools.
That day's edition of the newspaper will feature a wrap-around section featuring winning stories, poems and artwork from entries from students on the topic "The Magic and Memories of My Favorite Food."
Among those selling newspapers:
- From The Advertiser: Catherine E. Toth and Lee Cataluna.
- From KSSK radio: Michael W. Perry and Larry Price.
- From KHON-2: Manolo Morales and Trini Kaopuiki.
- From KITV: Paula Akana and Dan Cooke.
- From KGMB: Kim Gennaula, Ku'ualoha Taylor and Jim Mendoza.
- From KHNL: Barbara Wallace, Jodi Leong and Howard Dashefsky.
- From Oceanic Cable: Tiny Tadani.
- From KCCN-FM 100: Charly Espina, Billy V. and Jason "Pipi" Rezentes.
- From KUCD-FM Star 101: Hudson and Scotty B.
- From KORL-FM 99.5: Kimo Kahoano and Mahlon Moore.
- From KQMQ-FM The Q: Jeff Kino, Lois Miyashiro and Sean Ho.
- From KRTR-FM Krater 96: Chris Reiser and Chriss Hart.
- From KGMZ-FM Oldies 107.9: Jay Stone and Danielle Tucker.
- From KHVH-AM: Rick Hamada.
- From KDNN-FM Island Rhythm: Lana'i, Augie T. and Tehani Gonzado.
- From KIKI-FM I-94: Gregg Hammer and Shawnee.
- From the Outrigger Waikiki: the Society of Seven.
Proceeds from the sales (papers will be $1 each) will help fund PACT's programs for early childhood education and childcare, child abuse and domestic violence prevention and treatment, teen development, children's mental health, community building and economic development.
Another dimension of the Kids Day project is the placement of The Advertiser in schools.
Sponsors are sought to underwrite the special edition; to sponsor a school, organizations, businesses and individuals may call Jason George at PACT, 847-3285.
PACT, a private non-profit family service agency, is celebrating 33 years of service in Hawai'i this year.
