Environmental art show runs through May 28 at Ho'omaluhia

The 17th annual Aloha Ho'omaluhia, an environmental art show, is going on at the Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens visitors' center gallery through May 28.

Sarah E. McCormick, an instructor of art at Kapi'olani Community College, will curate the variety of media created specifically for the exhibition. It addresses environmental issues of Hawai'i through culture, politics and the beauty of the landscape, said McCormick.

But the environmental slant is not the only unique element. Artists can use the entire botanical gardens as a venue, said McCormick, which "breaks down barriers." There will be outdoor installations, which McCormick described as follows: "When artists want to go beyond art as one discreet little object (by creating an entire space with which viewers can interact)."

Selected Ho'omaluhia artists include David Behlke, Debra Drexler, Ka-Ning Fong, Raina Grigg, Jan Hathaway, Linda Hutchinson, Carl Jennings, Diana Jeon, Kloe Kang, Toni Martin, Marcia Morse, Diane Nushida-Tokuno and Russell Sunabe.

Gallery and garden hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens, 45-680 Luluku Road in Kane'ohe. For more information, call the visitors' venter at 233-7323.
