Neighbor Island high school leagues are resuming activity this week after the 20-day teachers' strike with sharply altered schedules.
Maui has abandoned its round-robin season altogether and is substituting tournaments to decide its champions and state tournament representatives. When the state fields were cut from 12 to eight teams, Maui's representation was halved from two to one.
Baldwin, which had already won a state berth in girls basketball, has to do it all over again in the 10-team, single-elimination tournament that starts Thursday.
Maui's eight baseball teams will play a double-elimination tournament, also starting Thursday. Two-time defending state baseball champion Moloka'i, which was in third place when the strike struck, is seeded No. 3, behind unbeaten Maui and Baldwin.
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation, with teams spread over 4,800 square miles, split its girls basketball schedule into North and South divisions. The top two teams in each division will enter a four-team playoff for the championship.
Kaua'i, which has only three schools in basketball and baseball, usually plays three rounds and had finished the first one before the strike began April 5. The Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation will finish the second round and have a two-game playoff in which the leaders after two rounds meet the winner of a game between the other two schools.
It's the best we could do, "given the circumstances," said Kaua'i executive secretary Brent Mizutani, adopting the phrase used by every league and state official in describing the condensed post-strike calendar.
