The Left Lane
Island footprints

"Lu'au feet" are real. Shoe buyers here report that, when it comes to ordering shoes for Island men and women, they order short and wide.

"Gut" and "key" are shoe-sales speak for the most popular sizes as measured by sales, according to Ivan Lee, regional merchandise manager for Salvatore Ferragamo. For Hawai'i men, gut sizes are 7 1/2 to 9 EE, with 8 1/2 EEE (Es are wider widths). The gut range on the Mainland, however is 9 1/2 to 11 D (D is a medium width). Hawai'i women's gut sizes are 5 1/2 to 7C, while Mainland women measure in at 7 to 8 1/2 B. Shorter and wider, just like the men.
