Tip-Off
'Don't Forget Me' a show to remember

Starving Artists Theatre Company, the award-winning independent theater group formerly based in Manoa, is returning to Hawai'i for a limited run of its "Don't Forget Me" drama, written and directed by Godfrey Hamilton and starring Mark Pinkosh.

Actor Mark Pinkosh and writer-director Godfrey Hamilton are bringing their 'Don't Forget Me' to The ARTS at Marks Garage this month
The one-man production, a hilarious and poignant play that skewers Hollywood and the romantic myths of Tinseltown, is at 7:30 p.m. May 23-26 and 4 p.m. May 27 at The ARTS at Marks Garage, 1159 Nu'uanu Ave.

Hamilton is the off-stage pillar, Pinkosh is the star of all of Starving Artists productions. They are partners in life off stage, too.

The show premiered at the Glasgay Theatre Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, last October, and has enjoyed a triumphant tour of London and across the United Kingdom. The homecoming engagement is the premiere for a planned U.S. tour.

Pinkosh plays a gamut of characters, including Angus, a vituperative Hollywood producer; Chip, an aspiring young actor; and Nancy Green, a faded star from yesteryear.

Tickets: $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors (advance); $20 at the door. Reservations: 528-0506 (Hawai'i Theatre box office).

Craig Schulman featured in symphony pops concerts

Craig Schulman, a veteran Broadway performer, returns to Hawai'i without the shackles of "Les Miserables" or the mask of "The Phantom of the Opera" when he stars in the next pair of Hawaiian Airlines Honolulu Symphony Pops concerts at 7:30 p.m. May 11 and12 at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Schulman: Broadway and opera performer
Schulman is the sole American stage artist who has performed the coveted leading roles in both "Les Miserables," in which he played Jean Valjean in the Victor Hugo tale, and "The Phantom of the Opera," in which he portrayed the masked menace of the Paris Opera House.

He starred as Valjean in two Honolulu productions of "Les Miz" in the 1990s and is widely known in the industry as producer Cameron Macintosh's favorite in that role. Indeed, he was part of Macintosh's landmark 10th anniversary "Les Miserables in Concert" several years ago in London, when all the actors playing Valjean in various productions all over the world (Schulman represented the United States) assembled to commemorate the milestone in a Public Broadcasting System televised special. To date, Schulman has starred as Valjean in four different companies in three countries, logging more than 1,900 performances.

Schulman also has starred in "Evita" (as Che), "Fiddler on the Roof" (Tevye) and "The Secret Garden" (Archibald). His most recent Broadway production was "Jekyll & Hyde." His performing abilities also embrace the opera, where his tenor voice has been heard in "The Tales of Hoffmann," "Tosca," "Madame Butterfly," "Carmen," "Die Fledermaus," "La Boheme," "La Traviata," "The Crucible" and "Manon."

In 1988, he debuted his solo concert show, "Craig Schulman on Broadway." In 1999, Schulman was a featured artist at the Honolulu Symphony Ball.

Anita Hall, who performs with a gospel group, Remnant, and with the jazz group Nueva Vida, will be the opening act. Matt Catingub will conduct the Honolulu Symphony.

Tickets: $55, $40, $30, $25, $15, on sale at the Blaisdell box office and Ticket Plus outlets.

Reservations: 792-2000 (symphony) or 526-4400 (Ticket Plus).
