Kailua outlasts Kaiser, 10-8

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kailua singled out Kaiser pitching en route to a 10-8 O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division baseball victory yesterday.

The Surfriders banged out 17 hits, 16 of them singles, as they beat the host Cougars to improve to 5-1. Kaiser dropped to 4-1-1.

Kailua scored four runs in the first, one in the fourth and five in the fifth.

The Surfriders batted 10-for-20 with runners in scoring position with 10 RBIs.

"I'm glad they showed up today," Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. "They came out and were ready to play."

The Surfriders led 10-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars scored five runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate.

Kailua starter Kamaile Santos then got Nathan Ota to ground out to third to end the game.

"We need to do it in all seven innings," Kaiser coach Duke Chinen said. "That's one thing we need to work on — start in the first inning."

In Kailua's half of the first inning, Jarid Kawamoto had an RBI groundout, Kawika Kekaula and Chris Ching had run-scoring singles, and Cody Vickery had a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.

In Kaiser's first, Eric Ching cut the lead in half with a two-run double just over the third base bag.

The Surfriders appeared to put the game away in the fifth when the first five batters singled, and 11 batters were sent to the plate.

As darkness began to settle in in the seventh, Kaiser's offense lit up the field.

The Cougars scored a run on an error before Chris Gallego hit a three-run homer to left-center and BJ Bernard belted the next pitch by Santos over the right-field fence to cut the deficit to 10-8.

With two outs and the bases empty, pinch hitter Casey Fukuda walked and Ian Matsuda bunted for a hit before Santos retired Ota to end the game.

"Kaiser is a tough team," Ishigo said. "They played us tough to the very end. They never quit on us."

Santos gave up 13 hits, while walking five and striking out one. He threw 119 pitches (61 strikes).

"He's a tough pitcher and a tough competitor," Ishigo said. "He always wants the ball in big games. Today he showed he could come back when things didn't go his way."
