Kalaheo's girls 6-0 in basketball

Advertiser Staff

Kalaheo High girls basketball coach Chico Furtado wanted to rest his starters last night so their legs would be fresh for tonight's showdown against Farrington that probably will decide the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division championship.

But the athletes from Kahuku denied him the opportunity.

Brandy Richardson scored an O'ahu-season high 28 points and the Mustangs needed almost every one of them last night to turn back Kahuku 63-58 before 170 at Kalaheo. Richardson and the other Kalaheo starters had to play almost the entire game.

Kalaheo improved to 6-0 this season with its 41st straight Eastern Division victory since 1997 and set up tonight's showdown with Farrington (5-0) at about 7 p.m. Farrington beat Kaimuki, 45-39, last night.

Tonight will be Kalaheo's third game in three nights since the OIA season resumed after a 26-day hiatus because of the public school teachers' strike. "We'll just have to play through it," Furtado said.

Natasha Kai, the all-state soccer player and track and field champion headed for the University of Hawai'i, led Kahuku (3-3) with 15 points.

After the lead changed hands six times on the first six baskets of the second half, Kalaheo went on a 12-0 run — six points by Richardson — to take a 50-39 lead, but Kahuku would not roll over.

Despite the loss of two-way star Michelle Peters to fouls and foul trouble for Kai, her sister, Krisha, and others, the Red Raiders clawed back to 57-56. Heather Gonsalves scored on a putback on the eighth shot of Kalaheo's next possession to put the Mustangs up 60-57.

Kahuku did not challenge again as Richardson closed the game with a block, an assist, a free throw and two defensive rebounds.

"They had us going all the way to the end," Richardson said. "We had a hard time on defense; we didn't match up with them and they were athletically better than us."

Kalaheo moved from second to No. 1 this week in the state coaches and media poll, despite not playing a game since March 31. Voters in the HawaiiSportsNetwork.com poll elevated the Mustangs after season-long No. 1 Punahou was beaten by Kamehameha 50-46 last Friday.

Punahou and Kamehameha play off for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship at 6 p.m. today at Iolani.
