'Aiea boys, Mililani girls claim OIA tennis titles

Advertiser Staff

Brenton Arakaki won the deciding first singles match in three sets to give 'Aiea a 3-2 victory over Mililani and the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys team tennis championship yesterday at Pearl Ridge courts.

Arakaki defeated Jeremy Young, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, as tennis players completed the first official matches since the public school teachers' strike ended.

Mililani's girls defeated Pearl City 3-1 on the losers' courts, winning 48 of 56 sets, to take the girls crown for the umpteenth straight year (Coach May Ann Beamer has lost count, "it could be eight or 11"). The second singles match was stopped in progress after the Trojans won all three doubles contests to clinch the five-match event.

The OIA's Post-Season Classic, which is the divisional individual tournaments, starts Saturday, East at Turtle Bay Hilton and West at Waipahu High. It will conclude May 12.

The OIA individual championships, bringing together the top two singles players and doubles teams from each division, will be played May 14 at University of Hawai'i, at 4 p.m.
