Hilo woman killed in crash

A Hilo woman died yesterday afternoon after a two-car collision on Kaholo Bridge near the 31-mile marker on the Hawai'i Belt Road in North Hilo, according to Big Island police.

The victim was identified Dana Calderon, 47, of a Keaukaha address in Hilo. She and her husband had recently moved to the Big Island from Maryland.

Police said Calderon lost control of her 2001 Oldsmobile Alero while driving toward Hilo. Her car then hit the right side of the bridge, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2001 Nissan Maxima rental car driven by George Kinzer. A third car, a 1995 Mazda driven by Macculate St. Clair, also heading toward Hilo and following the victim's car, attempted to avoid the collision and struck the right side of the bridge, but did not hit the other two cars.

All of the people involved in the accident were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where Calderon was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m. Kinzer, 63, and his wife, Hazel Kinzer, 61, both visiting from Littleton, Colo., remained in the Hilo hospital in stable condition.

St. Clair, 66, of a Kea'au address, was treated and released. Her front-seat passenger, Frances Capo, 92, remained at the hospital in stable condition.

Calderon was not wearing a seat belt; the occupants of the other vehicles were wearing their seat belts. All three cars deployed airbags. The weather was clear at the time of the crash, just after 3:30 p.m.

The highway was closed for about 3› hours after the accident while police documented the scene and Public Works Department personnel cleaned auto fluids spilled on the road surface.

Yesterday's death was the 11th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 10 at the same time last year.

Suspect held in knife threat

Police yesterday arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly threatened his 26-year-old girlfriend with a knife and punched her in a domestic dispute in Kalihi.

According to police, an argument started between the couple yesterday afternoon and escalated quickly on the 1400 block of Linapuni St. The man allegedly held a knife to the woman's throat and made threats.

He put the knife down and the argument started again. The man allegedly punched the woman in the face and picked up another knife and made threats. The man fled but was later arrested by police on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

Man charged in auto theft

A man who police said fled after he was spotted driving a stolen car on April 30 has been charged.

Police charged Joseph Ahyuen, 36, with auto theft and set his bail at $50,000.

According to police, Ahyuen abandoned the stolen car after he was spotted by police in the McCully and Kapi'olani areas. Police arrested him at 4:30 a.m. on May 1. An investigation revealed that the auto theft was connected to an earlier burglary case in which keys were stolen, police said.

Warrant issued in harassments

Police yesterday were searching for a fugitive who has a history of harassment and is wanted for questioning for new cases of telephone harassment of high school students.

A contempt warrant was issued for Gary C. Santos, 31, on March 22, for failure to appear at trial for at least five cases of harassment.

Santos has 19 previous convictions for harassment and is wanted in questioning for new harassment cases. In the present series of cases, the caller phones teenagers interested in bodybuilding. The caller gives information about body massage oils popularly used. The caller continues to phone the teens even after they have declined further contact.

Santos recently left his Kalihi address with no available forwarding address. All attempts to contact Santos have failed. Anyone with information about him may call Crimestoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.
