The Japanese Women's Society annual fashion show is a little like a miniature Bryant Park, New York, extravaganza.

Each year this enthusiastic group of volunteers researches designers who offer a fresh approach to fashion. And designers respond by creating garments especially for the show.

This year, the show's 26th, is no exception. Honolulu's Jeanie Chun, owner/designer of Jean Michel USA and Jacqueline de Michel, is pulling out all the stops to showcase 85 garments on the runway. The three-part show will feature Chun's sophisticated resort and golf wear, her one-of-a-kind couture line and a line of European travel apparel she represents in Hawai'i, Geiger of Austria.

The evening collection includes embossed knits with glitter patterns, beaded chiffons and layered silk georgettes.æIn a departure from her usual neutrals, Chun is coming on in a blaze of color: turquoise, hot pink, celadon and red.

A youthful approach with strapless gowns in embroidered fabrics is complemented with shawls and scarves for her missy customers who appreciate the opportunity to cover up stylishly.

Chun began working with fabric mills to create silky-smooth thrice-mercerized cottons for her golf line. Together, they figured out a way to get a high SPF factor into the cottons.

Now, she is adding Pucci-inspired prints, pastel ginghams and fleece vests. On the runway for the first time will be a line of pants in polyester/rayon/spandex that hug and flatter the figure.

As a follow-up to the fashion show, Chun will hold a special trunk show Monday at her private salon at 3113 Olu St., off Kapahulu. Call 735-5112 for more information.

In addition to the fashion show, the JWS boutique will present a variety of vendors offering an assortment of items.
