Summer concert series at aquarium

Hawaiian musician Keola Beamer will perform at the Waikiki Aquarium on July 26.

Ke Kani O Ke Kai 2001, the Waikiki Aquarium's summer series of outdoor concerts, will feature four popular Hawai'i acts representing a spectrum of Island musical styles. The concerts will begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the aquarium galleries open for tours. The musical headliners:
  • June 28: The Brothers Cazimero, who for more than three decades have been innovators in traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music.
  • July 12: Jerry Santos and Olomana, more icons in contemporary, and sometimes, traditional Island music.
  • July 26: Keola Beamer, a veteran singer, composer, slack key guitarist and Hawaiiana scholar, who dwells on traditional and contemporary Hawaiian sounds.
  • Aug. 2: Colon, contemporary Island combo noted for the 'ukulele stylings of Jake Shimabukuro and the percussion work of Lopaka Colon.

Tickets: $18 for adults, free for keiki 12 and under; $13 for aquarium members. There are limits on per-family sales. Proceeds will support aquarium research, education and improvements. For more information, call 923-9741.

Kamehameha Glee concert tonight

The Kamehameha Schools Concert Glee Club performs at 7 tonight at Bishop Memorial Chapel on the school campus. The program will include Hawaiian and contemporary music, including arrangements by Randie Fong, Robert Cazimero and Les Ceballos. The program also will feature a musical setting for two poems by the Spanish poet Garcia Lorca, as well as African American spirituals. Admission is free. Information: 842-8873.

Symphony Ball set for May 26

The Honolulu Symphony Ball, scheduled May 26 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom, has the theme of "2000 & One: A Symphonic Odyssey." The black-tie event will begin with cocktails and a silent auction from 6 to 8 p.m.; dinner is at 8 p.m., followed by a live auction, a program and dance music. The ball, in its fourth season, raises money for the orchestra. Tickets: $225; premium tables of 10, $4,000-$10,000. Standard tables of 10, $2,250.
