The Board of Education yesterday recognized Clayton Fujie of Noelani Elementary as Hawai'i's 2001 elementary school principal of the year.

Fujie has been Noelani's principal since 1986. Under his leadership the school has gained a widespread reputation for academic excellence. It is currently Hawai'i's nominee in the National Blue Ribbon Schools program. This year, Noelani was one of 10 schools nationwide featured on PBS for its exemplary project-based learning program.

Noelani, in Manoa, also is known for its hospitality and active community involvement. Fujie knows almost all of the 500 students by their first names and personally gives campus tours to inquiring parents.

"Clayton's strength is his deft use of interpersonal skills," said Honolulu District Superintendent Raelene Chock. "He builds a positive, trusting relationship with the school community, establishing a cornerstone for a successful school."

Fujie's career with the Department of Education began in 1969 as history teacher and coach at Baldwin High.
