Police Beat

Police tighten security at HQ

Security has been increased at Honolulu Police Department headquarters in anticipation of the Asian Development Bank conference, which begins Monday at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The precautionary measures, placed into effect Wednesday at headquarters at 801 S. Beretania St., will continue until the weeklong conference ends. The measures include armed officers' monitoring visitors to headquarters and guarding outside entrances.

Police refused to disclose all the security measures at headquarters, but said the public will be allowed to go to the second floor and eat in the restaurant after checking in at the security post. The public might be escorted to the restaurant; bags might be searched.

Police headquarters is the planning center for the conference.

Two boys arrested after explosions

Two Campbell High School students have been arrested in connection with campus explosions that destroyed two restroom sinks Monday, police said.

According to police, a 17-year-old senior and 14-year-old freshman were arrested Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree criminal property damage and a fireworks violation.

The arrests were made after investigators talked with witnesses, police said. The interrogation implicated the 17-year-old boy and vindicated the 14-year-old boy, police said.

The explosions destroyed porcelain sinks at the school's buildings "O" and "D." The explosions occurred at 1 and 1:24 p.m.

Police said vandals used red and white plastic aerial motor ball pyrotechnics. No one was injured.

Police search for Kailua car thieves

Police were searching for a man and a woman yesterday who used a stolen white Pontiac to break into two other cars in Kailua.

Police chased the car from Kailua to the Pali Highway, where the pursuit ended because of hazards to other motorists. A police helicopter picked up the chase until the suspects ditched the car on a narrow lane off Country Club Road shortly after 6 p.m.

The couple fled from the car and were still on the loose last night. The man was described as being in his 20s, and the woman in her early 40s with bleached-blonde hair.
