One dead, four injured in Laupahoehoe crash

One person was killed and four others injured in a three-car accident yesterday afternoon on the Big Island.

The accident occurred at about 3:35 p.m. on Highway 19 at the 31 mile marker in Laupahoehoe. Details of the accident were not available, but fire officials said one person was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center.

Four other people were transported to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.


Bicyclist dies from collision injuries

KIHEI, Maui — A 16-year-old bicyclist died Wednesday night after colliding with a Gas Co. truck on South Kihei Road.

The incident occurred at 6:45 p.m. near the Ala Koa Road intersection. Robert T. Glavor of Kihei was speeding downhill on his bike and overshot a right turn, crossing into the opposite lane of traffic and striking the rear tire of the truck as it was headed south, said Sgt. Victor Ramos of the Maui Police Department Traffic Section.

Glavor, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

There have been eight traffic fatalities in Maui County so far this year, compared with four at the same time last year.


Cameras donated to Big Island police

KEALAKEHE, Hawai'i — West Hawai'i police have been given 105 Polaroid Express cameras for use in domestic violence investigations.

The $1,604 gift from part-time Kailua-Kona residents Ruth and Bill True of Seattle, Wash., will help officers document injuries from domestic violence.

Police credited Carole Gruskin, West Hawai'i coordinator for the Rural Community Response Project, with linking the Trues' interest with the police unit dealing with the problem.


Use of marijuana topic of gathering

HILO, Hawai'i — A daylong community gathering on the medical use of marijuana will begin at 9 a.m. today at the main pavilion at Wailoa State Park.

Organizer Roger Christie of the Hawai'i Cannabis Ministry said the speakers include Dr. Glen Swartwout of Hilo and Dr. Bill Wenner of Volcano, who has written many of the prescriptions issued under the state's new law allowing limited amounts of marijuana for patients.

After the three-hour workshop on the medicinal use of marijuana, there will be sessions on industrial hemp and "religious use of Holy Herb," Christie said.

The free event will close with a sacred drum circle at 4:20 p.m. followed by music until 9 p.m. For more information, call (808) 961-0488.


Moloka'i/Maui ferry to begin service

LAHAINA, Maui — The ferry connecting Moloka'i and Maui will begin its first run Monday.

The schedule calls for the Moloka'i Princess to leave Kaunakakai Monday through Saturday at 6 a.m. and arrive at Lahaina at 7:15 p.m.

The return trip would leave Lahaina at 5 p.m. and arrive in Kaunakakai at 6:15 p.m. There is no ferry service on Sundays.

Moloka'i residents commuting to jobs on Maui will be charged a discounted rate of $15 for a round trip, while others will pay $40 for a one-way trip.

In between ferry trips, the 149-passenger Moloka'i Princess will be used for sightseeing day trips to Moloka'i, departing Maui at 7:30 a.m. and returning at 4:45 p.m.

Sea Link of Hawai'i Inc. operated the Maui Princess ferry service between Moloka'i and Maui that shut down in 1996 after state subsidies ended.


Robber sought in Maui bank heist

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui police are looking for a man who robbed the American Savings Bank branch in the Sack N Save supermarket in Wailuku yesterday.

The bandit handed a note demanding cash to a teller at 9 a.m. then fled with the loot, police said. No weapon was seen.

The suspect is described as possibly a Caucasian male about 6 feet tall with a slim build, weighing about 180 pounds. The man had white hair with a receding hairline.

He was wearing a white T-shirt and floral-print shorts and carried a black bag.
