Kalaheo's 4th-quarter surge sinks Farrington

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Kalaheo High School girls basketball team remained unbeaten with a 58-38 win over Farrington last night.

But as far as 20-point wins go, this one was no walk in the park. Kalaheo (7-0) jumped out to an 11-0 run to start the game but the visiting Governors (5-1) scrambled back and tied the score at 27 midway through the third quarter. The Mustangs finished the period with a 9-1 run, however, and sealed the win by scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter.

Kalaheo had just come off a tough 63-58 win over Kahuku in another key O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division showdown on Wednesday.

"This was our third game in three days, and we have another one tomorrow," Mustangs forward Brandy Richardson said. "Our team is tired. It's been a long week for everyone."

As usual, Richardson led the way for Kalaheo last night. She scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked four shots and made two steals. In a three-minute stretch midway in the second half, Richardson scored on a putback, sank two free throws and finished a drive through a crowded lane to stretch a 29-28 lead into a 38-28 advantage.

"Brandy took the game over," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said "She knows how to get in there and score."

The Governors, led by junior guard Cherilyn Ligot, showed they know how to rally. After falling behind 11-0 in the first three minutes and 15-6 early in the second quarter, Farrington clawed its way back. Tina Sanerivi's layup pulled the Govs to 21-17 at halftime, and a short jumper by Ligot tied the score at 27 with 4:30 left in the third quarter.

Ligot, shooting from all angles, finished with 12 points to lead Farrington.

"I'm proud of our team, they put their heart into it," Tumaneng said. "That's what we've tried to instill in them: Play hard all 32 minutes, no matter what the score is."

Dawnelle Nahinu's free throw with 2:23 left in the game ended a 22-1 run for Mustangs, giving them a 51-29 lead.

But the frantic pace never slowed.

"You don't ever count out Farrington, it doesn't matter if you're up by 15 or 20 points," Richardson said. "They have quick guards, and they all play hard. They never give up."

Freshman point guard Bre Carson added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, for Kalaheo.

The Mustangs play at Kailua tonight.

"I felt if we could get through these last two games unscathed, we'd be in good shape," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "Both teams caused us some problems — Kahuku with their athleticism and Farrington with their quickness. But I'm was much happier with our defensive effort tonight."
