Two Hawai'i boxers in Golden Gloves semis

Wai'anae's Walter Salas won by a walkover yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the 156-pound division in the National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament at Reno, Nev.

Wahiawa's Brian Battease lost his quarterfinal bout at 119 pounds, falling by a 3-2 decision to Francisco Urabazzo of Colorado.

Jesse Rodriguez of Wai'anae will also fight in today's semifinals. He advanced in the 106-pound division with a victory on Monday.


GOLF

• All-WAC team: University of Hawai'i sophomore Scott Carlyle was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference men's golf second team.

Carlyle, of El Dorado Hills, Calif., finished tied for 19th in the WAC championships last week, his sixth top-20 finish of the season.

David Inglis of Tulsa, who won the conference tournament at Broken Arrow, Okla., was named Freshman of the Year. Nick Watney of Fresno State was Player of the Year. Co-Coaches of the Year were Bill Brogden of Tulsa and Rick Todd of Texas-El Paso.


All-Western Athletic Conference

Men's golf

First team: Franklin Hatchett, Southern Methodist; David Inglis, Tulsa; Adam Rubinson, Texas Christian; Dan Swanson, Texas-El Paso; Nick Watney, Fresno State.

Freshman of the Year: Inglis.

Player of the Year: Watney

Co-Coach of the Year: Bill Brogden, Tulsa and Rick Todd, Texas-El Paso.

Second team: Scott Carlyle, Hawai'i; Nathan Fritz, Texas-El Paso; Mike Haack, Nevada; Sprague Kolp, Nevada; Scott Volpitto, Texas-El Paso.


PADDLING

• Moloka'i Challenge 2001: Kanaka I Kai Ka's Moloka'i Challenge 2001 will be held on Sunday, May 20.

The 32-mile race will begin at Moloka'i and conclude at the Hawai'i Kai Towne Center's Marina Courtyard dock.

The first paddlers are expected finish at noon, but festivities continue until 3 p.m.


VOLLEYBALL

• Armed Forces tournament: The Armed Forces Volleyball Championship Tournament is May 11-15 at the Fort Schafter Physical Fitness Center.

The tournament is hosted by the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army, Hawai'i.

Male and female teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines will be competing for the interservice titles.

The winning coach and 12 players will be selected to play in higher level competition.
