Hilo woman dies in head-on crash

A Hilo woman died Thursday after a two-car collision on Kaholo Bridge near the 31-mile marker on the Hawai'i Belt Road in North Hilo, Big Island police said.

The victim was identified as Dana Calderon, 47, of a Keaukaha address in Hilo. She and her husband had recently moved to the Big Island from Maryland.

Police said Calderon lost control of her 2001 Oldsmobile Alero while driving toward Hilo just after 3:30 p.m.

The car hit the right side of the bridge, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2001 Nissan Maxima rental car driven by George Kinzer.

A 1995 Mazda driven by Macculate St. Clair, also heading toward Hilo and behind Calderon's car, tried to avoid the collision and struck the right side of the bridge.

All the people involved were taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where Calderon was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

Kinzer, 63, and his wife, Hazel, 61, both visiting from Littleton, Colo., remained in the Hilo hospital in stable condition.

St. Clair, 66, of a Kea'au address, was treated and released. Her front-seat passenger, Frances Capo, 92, remained at the hospital in stable condition.

Calderon was not wearing a seat belt; the occupants of the other vehicles were. All three cars deployed airbags.

The highway was closed for about 3 1/2 hours after the crash.

It was the 11th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with 10 at the same time last year.

Teenager charged in Hilo beating

An 18-year-old Hilo man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the severe beating of another Hilo man Feb. 17.

Hilo detectives, acting on a tip, arrested the man Thursday and charged him with second-degree attempted murder. The suspect's name was not released because he was 17 when the beating occurred.

On Feb. 17, a man told police that he was beaten by a man with a baseball bat and machete at Keawe and KalŒkaua streets. As he attempted to flee, the man said he was run over by a car driven by another suspect.

The man was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Police believe that three men were involved in the attack. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Hilo CrimeStoppers at 961-8300, or Kona CrimeStoppers at 329-8181.

Boyfriend accused of knife threat

Police on Thursday arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly threatened his 26-year-old girlfriend with a knife and punched her in a domestic dispute in Kalihi.

According to police, the couple began arguing in the 1400 block of Linapuni Street yesterday afternoon. The man allegedly held a knife to the woman's throat and made threats.

When the argument intensified, the man allegedly punched the woman in the face, picked up another knife and made threats.

The man fled but was arrested by police later on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
