HPU tops No. 1 seed Humboldt in softball

Brandy Choy Foo hit a solo home run in the sixth inning yesterday as Hawai'i Pacific upset top-seeded Humboldt State, 2-1, in the first round of the Pacific West Conference championship tournament in Bellingham, Wash.

The fourth-seeded Lady Sea Warriors were scheduled to play Western New Mexico (33-8) later in the day, but the game was postponed because of rain. The teams will meet today at 7 a.m. (HST).

In other games yesterday, Western New Mexico and Humboldt State (45-12-1) both beat host Western Washington (31-16-1), knocking the Vikings from the double-elimination tournament.

Choy Foo's blast over the left-field fence was one of only three hits the Lady Sea Warriors (34-13) managed off three-time PacWest Pitcher of the Year Jessame Kendall.


BASEBALL

• SJSU beats Hilo, 5-2: Jeremy Rogelstad pitched an eight-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts as San Jose State defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 5-2, in a Western Athletic Conference game last night at San Jose, Calif.

San Jose State improved to 28-20 overall and 15-13 in the WAC. Hilo fell to 5-37 and 3-25.


FOOTBALL

• Semi-pro game at Kailua: The Hawaiian Warriors will play the Windward Hawks in a semi-professional Hawai'i Football League game today at 7 p.m. at Kailua High School.

The game will be dedicated to the country's military members who have died in service this year.


GOLF

• Soranaka shows: Honolulu's Sally Soranaka was the top amateur at the Wells Fargo Classic, which ended Wednesday at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. The event was part of the Ladies Challenge mini tour.

Soranaka shot 75-72-75 to finish at 222, 10 shots behind winner Joellen Erdmann (73-212), who won $1,400. Ara Koh (71-214) was second and former Hawai'i resident Nicole (Horner) Gardner fourth. Gardner (73-77-76-226) won $650.


TRACK AND FIELD

• UH's Smith wins 5,000: University of Hawai'i's Cheryl Smith won the 5,000 meters with an impressive time yesterday at the Texas Invitational in Austin.

Smith beat the rest of the pack by more than half-minute with a time of 16:52.33 seconds.

• Macdonald solid in 800: University of Oregon's Eri Macdonald of Kailua ran 800 meters in 2 minutes, 7.8 seconds last night, the fastest ever by a female from Hawai'i, and the first tentative NCAA qualifying time of her career in the Cardinal Invitational at Stanford, Calif. The time moves her into ninth place on the Oregon all-time 800 list.

Macdonald is a 1999 Punahou School graduate and four-time Hawai'i high school 800 champion.

Macdonald placed sixth in a race won by Shayne Culpepper of adidas in 2:04.07.


WATER POLO

• Wahine win opener: The University of Hawai'i Wahine water polo team took an early 5-0 first-quarter lead in routing UC Irvine 12-5 in the opening round of the National Collegiate Select Championships last night at Stockton, Calif.

Rebecca Angus and Christi Bardecki scored three goals apiece for UH, which improved to 23-7. UC Irvine fell to 3-28.

Hawai'i plays host to Pacific and UC Santa Barbara today.
