UH seniors' art on exhibit

By Virginia Wageman

Despite the faculty strike that kept teachers away from the classroom for more than two weeks, UH graduating seniors in the Department of Art have managed to put together an impressive exhibition of their work.

 •  Unfoldings
  • Art gallery, UH-Manoa
  • Through May 11
  • 956-6888
Titled "Unfoldings" in reference to the students' expanding awareness of the world, the exhibition is overwhelmingly installation art. Several of the installations involve the artists themselves, though it is doubtful they will live in the gallery to maintain their presence (as Joseph Beuys did in the 1970s).

Among the installations, Robyn Valorose's eerily lit fiberglass castings of feet is remarkable. Madeline Soder's sculptured busts, modeled from a synthetic material and covered with natural materials, such as leaves and bark, also stand out, as do Ricky Ngai's large Chinatown paintings.
