Navy crime investigators have arrested a 23-year-old Navy man in connection with the Friday shooting death of a sailor at Pearl Harbor.

Seaman Hawan T. Campbell was arrested Friday evening by agents of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service for allegedly shooting Seaman Gregory Ballard, 29, outside Gabrunas Hall.

Campbell has been placed in pretrial confinement at the Naval Station Pearl Harbor brig. He was assigned as an administrative assistant.

Navy officials said Department of Defense police at Pearl Harbor were called to Gabrunas Hall about 4 a.m. Friday when witnesses reported hearing shots fired.

Ballard was found shot at least three times and was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been assigned to the staff of the Pacific Command at Camp Smith.

Gabrunas Hall is a billeting facility for enlisted service members of both sexes.

Navy investigators said they won't release specific details regarding the shooting until the investigation is complete.
