Give your furry or feathered friend an opportunity to paint a masterpiece, check out some pet cuisine cooking demonstrations and enjoy other activities at the Hawai'i Pet Expo 2001, held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and May 13 at Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

The free event is open to pets and their humans, and will feature educational displays, live demonstrations and the latest in pet products and services. Highlights include a cat show; a parade of dogs; the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association's Ask-A-Vet booth; and a Picasso Pets painting activity, where pets can create works of art by walking on papers with paint sandwiched between them.

The expo, presented by the HVMA, will be held in celebration of both National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week today through Saturday. The expo carries the theme "People and Pets, the Perfect Combination" and seeks to encourage responsible pet ownership and strengthen the bond between people and their pets.

Expo-goers are encouraged to bring cameras for the numerous photo opportunities, as well as to bring non-perishable food items (for humans) for the Hawai'i Foodbank. Donors will receive a gift.

Organizers ask that dogs be leashed, and pets be kept under their owners' control at all times. Call 845-1762 for more information.
