Martin Hodapp, 9, of Hilo, was named the Goodwill Ambassador for the Hawai'i Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Hodapp will make public appearances to encourage volunteers to take part in the association's year-round campaigns and also will participate in a number of the chapter's special events.
Dorothy Oshiro, a liaison for the state Department of Education at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, was selected by the National Art Education Association to receive the Hawai'i Art Educator of the Year Award. The annual award, which Oshiro received at a national convention in March in New York City, recognizes an outstanding NAEA member for service and contribution to art education.
Wayne Tanna, a volunteer attorney for Volunteer Legal Services Hawai'i and a professor at Chaminade University and University of Hawai'i-West O'ahu, was awarded the William Reece Smith Jr. Special Services to Pro Bono Award at the American Bar Association/National Legal Aid and Defender Association's Equal Access to Justice Conference in San Diego.
The winners of the 13th annual Hawai'i High School Writing Award Competition, sponsored by Hawai'i Pacific University, are Stephanie Kealaka'i Soares of Kamehameha Schools, first place; Kellie O'Neil Palakika James of Punahou School, second place; and Mia Foster Aku of Honoka'a High, third place. The winners received $500, $300 and $200 cash, respectively.
