Punahou sweeps ILH track titles

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pac-Five's Annie Kawasaki says she doesn't know what made her "take off for my life" in the last 200 meters of the 1,500-meter race yesterday but the result was a personal record and state season best of 4 minutes, 49.47 seconds.

Charles Rania of Punahou clears the last hurdle en route to winning the 300-meter hurdles race in 39.67 seconds.

Eugene Tanner • The Honolulu Advertiser

"Ten seconds faster and she qualifies for the Pac 10 (intercollegiate) championships," noted Punahou distance coach Duncan Macdonald.

"I learned to run scared chasing Victoria Chang (former Punahou state and national champion) the last three years," Kawasaki said. "I do well running scared."

Yesterday, she did well enough to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championship at Punahou, and came back an hour later to also win the 800, beating Punahou's Pippa Macdonald in 2:25.64.

That was four seconds off her best, but, Kawasaki noted, "It was the first time I have succeeded in two races. I usually finish first in the 1,500, but third in the 800.

"You give it all you've got in the first race and whatever you have left for the second."

Though Kawasaki's two stirring victories, a meet record discus throw by Iolani's Genia Linear and four first places by Sacred Hearts long jumper/sprinter Kelly Figueira stole the spotlight, Punahou's girls won their 36th consecutive league championship. Punahou scored 98 points to second-place Iolani's 83.

In their first year under new coach Louis Johnson, Punahou's boys were stronger than he expected, taking 11 of 16 first places and more than doubling second-place Kamehameha and third-place St. Louis with 107à points.

Linear hurled the discus 133 feet, 4 inches, then hurried off to a school function without taking any bows. Her previous best was 127 feet and change when she placed second in the Surf City Invitational at Huntington Beach, Calif., during spring break, coach Earl Hedani said.

"She came back with a lot of confidence," Hedani said. "She said she felt good today and said, 'I'm going to win them all,' " including the state championship on Maui May 19.

Figueira, who seven days before got off the best-ever long jump by a Hawai'i high school girl (19 feet, 3´ inches), broke the meet record with a leap of 18-6à yesterday but it was negated by an aiding tailwind a bit over the allowable.

Figueira beat Iolani's Lauran Dignam in a photo-finish 100, both timed in 12.31 seconds, anchored the winning 4x100 relay team and beat out Dignam again in the 200 in 25.48. A frustrated Dignam flopped on the ground at the finish line of the 200 and stayed there a while after her second close loss to her nemesis.

In the boys meet, Daniel Inferrera of St. Louis won both sprints and Jeremy Inferrera of St. Louis won the discus. Punahou's Todd Iacovelli won the 1,500 in 4:12.6 and 3,000 in 9:35.88.

Punahou coach Johnson said he was pleasantly surprised by the victories of Dane Uperesa (51-8 shot put), Troy Nakamatsu (15.41 in the high hurdles), Jason Ching (6-1 high jump), John Yamane (51.96 400), Brent Young (13-6 pole vault) and Derek Turbin (45-4 triple jump).

Michael Fujioka (1:57.67 in the 800), Charles Rania (39.67 in the 300 hurdles to nip Kamehameha's Jesse Lee) and the 4x400 relay team were the other Punahou winners.

LAST HURDLES: Annie Kawasaki has a 4.24 grade-point average at St. Francis High, taking honors and advanced placement courses. She has signed a track scholarship agreement with Portland State and says her dream is to run in a "really big collegiate meet at Hayward Field" (at the University of Oregon). . . . Punahou grad Eri Macdonald's 800 time for University of Oregon Friday night was 72/100ths of a second faster than the one published yesterday in the Advertiser. It should have read: 2:07.08.

• Kai a winner: After playing four basketball games in four nights, Kahuku senior Natasha Kai changed shoes and won her specialty — the 300-meter low hurdles — at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division track and field championships last night at Kaiser High

Kai's time was 47.5 seconds, well off her divisional meet record of 46.7 set two years ago.

Most other results of the meet will not be available before Tuesday, an OIA spokesman said.
