Advertiser Staff

St. Louis won seven individual titles to claim the inaugural Interscholastic League of Honolulu Boys Judo Championship Tournament yesterday at Kekuhaupi'o Gym.

The Crusaders finished with a total of 169 points. Pac-Five (141) finished second with Kamehameha (106) placed third.

St. Louis trailed Pac-Five by nine points entering the finals, but just one of the Wolfpack's six finalists won a title.

National judo champion Jonathan Spiker and All-American wrestler Travis Lee headlined the Crusaders squad as they won their respective weight divisions.

The suspense ended early in the girls division as Kamehameha won seven of the ten weight division titles en route to 170 points.

Pac-Five finished a distant second with 91 points.

The Warriors' Charis Kapo'o won the 160-pound title unopposed because she was the only competitor entered in the weight class.

OIA GOLF

• Yasui wins boys title: Pearl City's Grant Yasui averaged about 71 strokes a round during the O'ahu Interscholastic Association regular season, and playing his average game again yesterday earned him the OIA championship.

Yasui's 1-under-par round, a steady 35-36, included three birdies and two bogeys.

"The greens were slow" at rain-dusted, windless Makaha Golf Club, Yasui said.

Facing a playoff with Wai'anae's Earl Medeiros if he bogeyed the 18th hole, Yasui made a birdie-3 to clinch victory. Medeiros shot 73.

Yasui's will be to improve on his fifth-place finish at the state championships last year. This year's event will be at Kapalua on Maui on Saturday.

71—Grant Yasui (Pearl City) 35-36. 73—Earl Medeiros (Wai'anae) 37-36. 74—Josh Chin ('Aiea) 39-35. 75—Nick Mason (Leilehua) 39-36; Brandon Abreu (Pearl City) 38-37. 76—Kellan Anderson (Leilehua) 36-40; Bronson Kalilikane (Kapolei) 36-40. 77—Chris Kobayashi (McKinley) 38-39. 78—Ryan Perez (Moanalua) 39-39; Jared Apilado (Kahuku) 40-38. 79—Jaren Nimi (Mililani) 41-38; Jared Yamane (Mililani) 39-40. 80—Andrew Ching (Kahuku) 42-38; Kalama Hines (Kalaheo) 42-38; Brad Ching (McKinley) 42-38; Joey Itagaki (Roosevelt) 39-41; Landon Mizuguchi (Kaiser) 44-36.

• Apelu tops the girls: Radford junior Angela Apelu shot a career best 1-under-par 72 to win the OIA girls championship by six strokes yesterday at the Kalakaua Golf course in Schofield Barracks.

Apelu made four birdies — a personal record — all on the back nine and made the longest putt of her life, a 35-footer from the fringe, "almost off the green."

"My putting was putting really on," Apelu said. "On most of the par 3s, I put my iron on the green, pretty close, most of the time and had easy putts."

McKinley's Tiffany Takao was second with a 78.

Defending state champion Merwynn Ito of 'Aiea tied for third with Radford's Eleanor Apelu at 79, and defending OIA champion Ayumi Hori of Moanalua was fifth at 82.

Apelu's previous best round was 75. She improved 11 strokes over last year's OIA championship, when she placed third with 83-84—167.

This year's championship was reduced to 18 holes because of the 20-day teachers strike.
