A road trip that had a promising start ended with Nevada completing a three-game sweep of Hawai'i, 8-5, yesterday in Western Athletic Conference baseball at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev.
The Rainbows (23-27, 10-20 WAC), who opened the trip with a 9-7 come-from-behind win at Sacramento State on Tuesday, must win their remaining six games against UH-Hilo for a winning season.
The Wolf Pack (29-23, 17-16) trailed 2-1 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the third against UH starter Sean Yamashita (2-9) to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Yamashita pitched 5Á innings, allowing seven runs (five earned), 11 hits and two walks. He struck out three. Bryan Lee pitched the final 1 innings, allowing an unearned run.
"Sean pitched good, made some great pitches," UH acting coach Carl Furutani said. "But for me, I believe the altitude hurt his breaking ball at times."
That and five errors, three by shortstop Cortland Wilson.
Clint Kofmehl (3-1) pitched 8 innings, allowing four runs (one earned), five hits and one walk. He struck out seven before giving way to Jason Mackintosh, who snared a line drive off the bat of Gregg Omori to end the game.
