University of Hawai'i junior Cheryl Smith completed a distance double yesterday, capturing the 5,000-meter run at the Texas Invitationals in Austin.

Smith, who won the 3,000 on Friday, finished yesterday's race in 16 minutes, 52.33 seconds to win by 36 seconds.

UH sophomore Casey McGuire-Turcotte won one of the 1,500-meter events with a time of 4:39.74.

SOFTBALL

• HPU swept away: Hawai'i Pacific lost two games yesterday — 2-1 to Western New Mexico and 4-0 to Humboldt State — and were eliminated from the Pacific West Conference championship tournament in Bellingham, Wash.

The fourth-seeded Lady Sea Warriors (34-15) saw their postseason hopes all but dashed with the double setback.

HPU's Jessica Parra pitched a two-hitter in the opener, but Western New Mexico scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the victory.

In the loser-out second game, Jessame Kendall pitched a three-hitter, striking out three and walking none, to lift sixth-ranked and top-seeded Humboldt State. Kendall improved her record to 31-10.

Kim Coker had two RBI singles for the Lady Lumberjacks (48-12-1), who went on to capture the PacWest title by defeating second-seeded Western New Mexico, 2-1 in eight innings and 3-2 in 13 innings.

• UHH's best: Pitcher Taysha Anderson, who won her last 10 decisions, was named University of Hawai'i-Hilo's Most Outstanding Player.

Anderson, a junior from Central Point, Ore., earned second-team all-Pacific West Conference honors after compiling a 13-4 record and a 1.42 ERA.

Also honored were Nancy Vega (Rookie of the Year), Michelle LaRose (Coaches Award) and Kealohi Reppun (Scholar/Athlete).

Vega, a freshman from Mililani, led the team with 14 doubles and three homers. She batted .317 with 19 RBIs.
