Suicide suspected in fatal car crash

A 74-year-old woman committed suicide yesterday by driving her car into an oncoming school bus carrying an elderly church group, police said.

Police believed the head-on collision, on Hawai'i Belt Road near the Pepe'ekeo Overpass, was an accident until they learned the woman had left a suicide note at her home in Hilo, said Sgt. Samuel Jelsma of the Traffic Enforcement Unit.

She was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center.

The driver of the bus was not injured, but four of his 11 elderly passengers were treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released. They had been returning from a Kona Hongwanji church convention.

Police partially closed Hawai'i Belt Road for about three hours. Traffic was rerouted onto an old unpaved cane-haul road.

Woman stabbed at Chinatown eatery

Police have opened an attempted murder investigation after a restaurant customer was stabbed by another woman in Chinatown yesterday morning.

According to police, a woman was standing in line and talking with a friend at the Royal Kitchen restaurant at River Street Mall.

A woman behind the victim said the victim was making fun of her, and stabbed her just before 8:14 a.m.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in stable condition.

The assailant fled the scene.

Man robbed near Ala Wai Canal

Police today were searching for two robbers who took money and a cellular phone from a man Saturday night near the Ala Wai Canal.

Police said the attack happened at 10:30 p.m. when a 31-year-old man parked his car on Ala Wai Boulevard to visit a friend. Two men seated against the wall on Lipeepee Street approached him and demanded money. One of the robbers was armed with brass knuckles, and the other had a butterfly knife.

They stole the man's money and cellular phone. Before calling the police, the victim tried calling his cell phone several times and discovered that it was in use.

Man charged in Kaimuki burglary

Police have charged a 41-year-old man in connection with a burglary Saturday in Kaimuki.

Police charged Christopher Perkins, who has no local address, with second-degree burglary, and set his bail at $30,000.

They said a burglar tripped a silent alarm when he broke into Yamato Enterprises at 2960 Wai' alae Ave. on Saturday morning. Police saw a man inside and entered. The man fled to the rear of the building and threatened to shoot. He surrendered after police used pepper spray. No gun was found.

ADB member's laptop, data stolen

A laptop computer and sensitive paperwork belonging to a member of the Asian Development Bank conference was stolen from the Ala Moana Hotel on Saturday.

Police said they recovered some of the items when they arrested a 28-year-old woman yesterday on suspicion of auto theft and fraudulent use of license plates at the Ala Moana Shopping Center.

They found the paperwork and laptop computer case in the stolen car she was driving, but no computer.

Police said the woman had been seen with a man wanted in connection with an auto theft and firearms case in Chinatown on Friday night. In that case, four suspects fled in a stolen sport utility vehicle near the intersection of North King and Maunakea streets after being spotted by police. Two were caught, and a check of the vehicle found two loaded weap ons.
