Oregon's top basketball player signs with Wahine

Advertiser Staff

Chelsea Wagner, the state Player of the Year in Oregon, has signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball team next season.

Wagner, a 5-foot-10 wing player, averaged 21.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior for Springfield High School in Eugene, Ore. Springfield High competes at the 4A level, Oregon's largest division for interscholastic sports.

"Obviously, we are getting a great talent," UH coach Vince Goo said. "She's exactly what we look for in a wing player — an accurate shooter, good ball-handler and an aggressive rebounder."

Wagner was recognized by both The Oregonian and USA Today as Player of the Year. She also led her team to a third-place finish in the state tournament.

"During her visit she showed a lot of interest in academics, which is an important part of being in the program," Goo said.

Wagner joins fall signees Jade Abele (6-1, Australia), Milia Macfarlane (5-5, Punahou School) and Arijana Sijercic (6-2, Bosnia) in this year's recruiting class.
