The Kalaheo High School girls basketball team methodically claimed a share of its fourth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division title last night with a 44-28 win over host McKinley.

The Mustangs (9-0) end their regular season against Kaimuki tomorrow and can win the championship outright with a victory. Even if Kalaheo gets upset and second-place Farrington (7-1) wins its final two games, the Mustangs would receive the East's No. 1 seed in the OIA tournament because they beat Farrington.
Kalaheo senior Brandy Richardson split the McKinley defense to score on a first-quarter layup. She was fouled on the play and made the free throw.
Last night's victory was Kalaheo's 45th straight in Eastern Division play, dating to 1997. It was the Mustangs' fifth win in eight days, following a 26-day layoff due to the Hawai'i State Teachers Association strike.
"It's been a rough five games to get to this point," said senior forward Brandy Richardson, who scored a game-high 18 points. "Things have been hard since the strike ended."
Kalaheo, ranked No. 1 in a state-wide poll by HawaiiSportsNetwork.com, showed some wear-and-tear against McKinley (5-4). The Mustangs trailed 10-9 after one quarter and led 15-14 with two minutes left in the half.
But a 16-0 run midway through the second half finally put the Mustangs out of reach.
"We live and die by the '3,' and when we missed they were too strong in the low post," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "They took away our second shots. And defensively, they shut us down in the second half."
The Tigers need a win at Castle on Friday to strengthen their playoff hopes. They are playing without leading scorer Traci Torralva, who is out for the season with an ankle injury.
"She is to them what Brandy is to us," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "She's a real big factor."
For the Mustangs, they can finally savor another title.
"This is a special thing," Richardson said. "The strike was the last thing we thought was going to happen, and then we never knew when it was going to end. Now we don't want to take anything for granted."
