The Asian Development Bank protest march yesterday came off relatively peacefully and turned out fewer protesters than expected.
The demonstration began with Hawaiian activists chanting and speaking for the cause of sovereignty. Opponents of ADB policies and programs then marched from Ala Moana Park to the Hawai'i Convention Center, where the ADB officially opened its weeklong meeting.
Under the watchful eyes of Honolulu police and security guards, the marchers chanted and gave speeches for about an hour in front fo the convention center, where ADB President Tadao Chino spoke briefly with leaders of the protest group. The group then moved down Kalakaua Avenue and ended with a rally at Kapi'olani Park.
