For the second year in a row, University of Hawai'i volleyball coach Mike Wilton's contract will lapse.

"Hopefully, it's an oversight," coach Mike Wilton said.

The contract Wilton signed last October is set to expire on May 31. There have been no contract talks scheduled.

His contract situation is not on the agenda for next week's Board of Regents meeting, although it could be discussed in executive session. Still, the regents would have to approve any contract extension in a public forum. Athletic director Hugh Yoshida is charged with recommending contract extensions.

The next chance the regents could rule on a contract extension for Wilton is at the monthly meeting in mid-June.

"Hopefully, it's an oversight," said Wilton, who worked without a contract for five months before receiving an offer last October.

But he said he is "hopeful" his situation will be resolved soon. "I want to continue coaching in this program," he said. "We've come a long way in nine years."

UH administrators have indicated Wilton eventually will be offered an extension, although it is not known if it will be the multi-year deal that Wilton seeks.

This year, the Warriors were ranked No. 1 nationally for two weeks and reached the championship match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament. The MPSF is considered to be the best college league in men's volleyball.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are close to receiving a commitment from 6-foot-10 middle blocker Joshua Stanheiser of California. Stanheiser, a Seventh-day Adventist, is serving a church mission that ends in June. He would have three years to play two seasons.
