Leeward groups to sing for moms

Leeward Community College and Kawaiaha'o Church will team up for a "Mom, We Love You" concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Performers will include LCC's Kanikapila Singers and Chorus, directed by Marilyn Kim; and the Northwest College Singers, directed by Bob Engle, formerly with Kapi'olani Community College. Ruth Imperial Pfeiffer will be accompanist.

'Aladdin' musical playing in Kailua

Act One Children's Theater will present its spring musical, "Aladdin, the Magician," at 7 p.m. May 14 and 15 at St. Christopher's Church, 93 N. Kainalu Drive, in Kailua. Tickets: $5 for adults, $2 for children.

Lee's 'Waikiki' at art academy

Filmmaker Edgy Lee takes center stage at a reception, which includes a talk and screening of her documentary, "Waikiki, in the Wake of Dreams," at 5:30 p.m. May 17 at the Luce Pavilion Complex.

The event begins with the reception; a talk is scheduled at 7 p.m. and the screening at 7:30 p.m. will follow in the Academy Theater.

Lee also will play host to an informal question-and-answer session after the showing.

Tickets: $8 for the public, $5 for academy members.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Shakuhachi, guitar concert at UH

Riley Lee, a shakuhachi artist, and Jeff Person, a guitarist, will be featured in a concert at 7:30 p.m. May 26 at Orvis Auditorium, University of Hawai'i.

The event, criss-crossing cultural boundaries, will include duets as well as solos. It also will focus on Island music — both original and classical Hawaiian favorites.

Try out for 'Cinderella'

Diamond Head Theatre will hold auditions for an encore production of its "Cinderella" musical at 2 p.m. June 2-3 at the DHT rehearsal hall.

Laurence Paxton and Stefanie Smart will reprise their roles as the king and queen, respectively, in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Apparently, Melissa Short, who originated the role here but since has moved to New York to seek a theatrical career there, no longer is committed to take on the lead.

John Rampage, DHT artistic director, will direct and choreograph. Emmett Yoshioka is musical director.
