Diving victim identified

A 45-year-old Wai'anae man who died Wednesday after he had a heart attack while diving for squid outside of He'eia Kea Boat Harbor has been identified as Wayne O. Kaahanui, according to the city's medical examiner.

Police said Kaahanui and a friend had gone about one mile outside of the harbor toward Kahuku just before 10:30 a.m. and were in the water for about 30 minutes.

Kaahanui, who was about 200 feet away, called out to his friend. The friend swam toward Kaahanui, who was trying to keep his head above water.

Once out of the water, Kaahanui was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation and taken to Castle Medical Center ,where he died at 11:11 a.m.


Blaze destroys ‘Aiea home

Fire destroyed a one-bedroom mobile home yesterday in ‘Aiea Heights.

The fire at 99-1019 Waikea Place was reported at about 5:15 p.m., said fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo. When firefighters arrived, the small structure had burned to the ground.

Soo said the 35-year-old owner of the home was slightly injured when he ran into the burning home to rescue his dog. The dog escaped without injury, Soo said.

Investigators said the fire began when the man was refueling a generator tank with the generator on. Damage was estimated at $35,000.


Ice skating rink, vehicles catch fire

Three vehicles were destroyed and the exterior of the Ice Palace skating rink was damaged in a fire last night in Halawa.

Firefighters were called to the Stadium Mall on Salt Lake Boulevard at about 8:15 p.m. last night. When they arrived, they found two cars engulfed in flames and the front of a rented truck on fire on a service road behind the Ice Palace, fire spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

The fire also had spread to a wall outside of the Ice Palace. The fires were extinguished at about 8:40. The Ice Palace closed early because of the fire. There were about 50 people there, and no one was hurt.

Fire investigators were looking into the cause of the fire. The two cars and truck were total losses and damage to the Ice Palace was estimated at $10,000, Soo said.


Woman arrested in pick attack

A 21-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly hit her ex-boyfriend with a small garden pick Saturday in Ma'ili.

Police said the 18-year-old ex-boyfriend argued with the woman and damaged her Kula'aupuni Street home. He tried to leave but the woman hit him twice on the head with the garden pick, police said. He suffered an injury to his right eyebrow that required stitches.

Police responded and arrested the man for a prior abuse case. On Tuesday, police arrested the woman on suspicion of second-degree assault.
