Kaua'i police arrest gun suspect
LIHU'E, Kaua'i A 63-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night at Salt Pond Beach Park after police were told he fired a shot from a handgun.
Police said James P. Stewart, of Marysville, Tenn., was charged with reckless endangerment and a firearm count.
Stewart was arguing with another person at the park when retrieved the handgun from his vehicle and fired it into the air, police said. No one was hurt.
Blood Bank seeks Big Island donors
HILO, Hawai'i The Blood Bank of Hawai'i will take blood donations in the Polynesian Room at the Hawai'i Naniloa Hotel from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18.
Donors must be 18 or older and weigh at least 110 pounds. Call (800) 372-9966.
Maui to receive roadwork update
WAILUKU, Maui A public briefing on state Department of Transportation projects will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Maui County Council chambers.
The agenda includes updates on improvements to Pi'ilani Highway; widening of Honoapi-'ilani Highway in Lahaina, Haleakala Highway and Mokulele Highway; and construction of a Pa'ai bypass.
Officials also will describe airport and harbor projects.

Wailuku displays mark Police Week
WAILUKU, Maui The Maui Police Department will celebrate Police Week with displays at its headquarters on Mahalani Street in Wailuku starting Monday.
Some exhibits will be moved next Friday to the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, with musical entertainment at 6:30 p.m.
Big Islanders warned of scam
HILO, Hawai'i Police are warning of a fund-raising scam that purports to benefit the police department's auxiliary.
Because there is no such auxiliary, the efforts to sell gift certificates for use at a hotel are illegal. Report such calls to officer Dexter Veriato at (808) 961-3264.
