'Aiea pounds Radford in OIA West, 50-24

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

If there was a doubt about who the best girls basketball team in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division is, 'Aiea squashed it last night.

Na Ali'i (8-0) secured the West's No. 1 seed for Saturday's OIA tournament and at least a share of the division title with a 50-24 rout of host Radford. The Rams entered the game at 6-1 and could have positioned themselves for the title with a win, but their hopes were dashed early.

'Aiea jumped out to an 11-2 start and Radford never came within five points of Na 'Ali'i after the first quarter. Fresno State-bound Aritta Lane scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead 'Aiea, and center Keesha Aldridge added 11 points. Na Ali'i guards Kylee Nakamura and Noelani Colburn each contributed eight points.

"They're tough inside and out," Radford coach Kekoa Ng said. "It's hard to press them, too, because they can get through the traps."

A 3-pointer by junior guard Heather Massey closed Radford to within 20-10 with 1:45 left in the half, but 'Aiea answered with six straight points to go into the locker room with a 26-10 lead. An 11-2 run put Na Ali'i up 42-17 late in the third period, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Colburn gave them a 48-18 lead with five minutes left.

Massey led the Rams with 11 points. Radford had already clinched a playoff spot but needs a win tonight to avoid a No. 4 seed.

Lane, a 5-foot-11 senior forward, said she and her teammates played together on their own "every day except Sundays" during the 20-day teachers' strike, during which official practices were not allowed. She said it's no accident 'Aiea is peaking as its regular season ends with a game at Mililani tonight.

"We stayed on track (during the strike), and we're really focused on these last three days," Lane said. "We want to execute."

Ng, whose team played East champion Kalaheo in the preseason, said 'Aiea would present a serious test for the Mustangs. Kalaheo is ranked No. 1 in a statewide poll by HawaiiSports Network.com.

"They're very similar," Ng said. "Especially the way (Na Ali'i) are playing now. They're on a roll."

'Aiea coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai had some scary words for other teams.

"We still can improve," she said.

TRACK AND FIELD

• OIA Trials: Pearl City teammates Carmen Calpo and Orion Wilson will take their intrasquad 800-meter duel public tomorrow in what could be the best competition of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships.

In last night's qualifying races at Mililani High, Calpo had the best time — one of the best in the state this year — of 2 minutes, 24.30 seconds and Wilson, running in another heat, was timed in 2:27.44.

Tomorrow's meet, also at Mililani, will start at 2:15 with field events; the first running event will be at 3 p.m.

Kahuku's Natasha Kai led qualifying last night in the 100 and 300 hurdles with modest times of 15.46 and 47.91 seconds. She also led qualifiers in the long jump and triple jump but officials did not report marks in field events.
