Three sentenced for not paying taxes

Three O'ahu brothers were sentenced yesterday for failing to pay thousands of dollars in federal income taxes.

David, Alan and Simon Chang, who sold T-shirts at the Aloha Stadium flea market and other venues, pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service for tax years 1991 through 1993.

U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor sentenced David Chang, president of Fortune Designs Collection Corp., to one year and one day in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also fined $3,000.

Simon and Alan Chang received six months' home detention with electronic monitoring and five years' probation. Each was fined $2,000.

Letter carriers collect donations

U.S. Postal Service letter carriers will be collecting food donations today to benefit the Hawai'i Foodbank.

Residents are urged to place nonperishable food items next to their mailbox for pickup.

This is the ninth year that letter carriers have held their program to "stamp out hunger." Hawai'i letter carriers collected 230,000 pounds of goods last year.
