Kalani wins sixth basketball game in row

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Ever since the 20-day public schools teachers' strike ended, the Kalani Falcons have been flying high with the help of scoring machine Ashley Takata.

Takata, a 5-foot-4 junior, completed an amazing run by scoring 27 points in a 63-38 victory over visiting Kaimuki last night on the final day of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division regular season.

The Falcons (6-4), after losing their first game after the strike, have won six straight.

In the six victories, Takata averaged 28 points per game. In the past three, she averaged 32.2 points.

"She's been phenomenal," Kalani coach Mike Zane said. "She's been consistently performing for us."

Last night, Takata made nine of 23 field goal attempts and 9-of-10 free throws.

"We all stepped it up," Takata said. "It was senior night, we knew what we needed to do.

"I'm just shooting and they're falling. I'm thankful for that."

Kalani broke open a 29-24 haltime advantage by outscoring Kaimuki (2-8) 34-15 in the second half.

In the second half, Kaimuki made 5-of-30 field goal attempts and committed 11 turnovers.

"We hung around for a little while, but we got worn out," Kaimuki coach Dean Watanabe said. "They're a good shooting team."

The Bulldogs used a 1-2-2 zone for most of the game in order to contain Takata.

"In the second half we played more man and that's when they ran away from us," Watanabe said.

Zane said the teachers' strike benefitted the Falcons, who practiced every day on their own, according to Takata.

"It made us a little bit more healthy, it got the girls closer together," he said. "They got their heads together and they decided we want to play some good basketball."

Jodi-Ann Segawa added 10 points and Chenty Bonafacio eight for Kalani.

Chyenna Souza scored 22 for Kaimuki, including four 3-pointers.
