SURFING

• Irons brothers advance: Brothers Andy and Bruce Irons of Kaua'i won their first-round heats in the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday in spectacular 6- to 10-foot waves at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Andy Irons was one of the day's top performers, scoring a total of 27.5 points (out of 30). His top three barrel rides received scores of 9.7, 9.0 and 8.8.

Bruce Irons, who is not a world tour competitor but qualified for the contest through a trials event, won his heat with a total score of 18.1.

With their victories, the Irons brothers advanced directly to the third round. Four other Hawai'i surfers — Sunny Garcia, Shane Dorian, Kalani Robb and Shawn Sutton — did not win heats yesterday and will have to compete in the elimination second round.

BASEBALL

• Komine injured: Nebraska won its first Big 12 title in 51 years, but had to do it without ace pitcher Shane Komine.

Komine, a Kalani High graduate, pitched two inning before injuring his back, and was forced to leave the game. Nebraska (41-12) beat host Iowa State 16-8 yesterday.

Komine (11-1) allowed three runs on five hits. It was his shortest outing since the 1999 season.
