Mililani, Farrington players capture OIA West, East titles

Mililani and Farrington tennis players swept the singles titles in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Division Individual Championships yesterday.

Mililani's Krystal Hangai and Jeremy Young won the OIA West girls and boys singles, respectively. Farrington's Wailyn Leong and Anthony Iligan won the OIA East boys and girls, respectively.

Nicole Sakai and Kellie Crail of Pearl City won the OIA West girls doubles and Bryce Kawabe and Arthur Phanpengdy of 'Aiea won the boys title.

In the OIA East, Jennifer Watanabe and Dinh Quach of McKinley won the girls championship. Matt Chang and Mike Chong of Kalaheo won the boys title.

All players that reached the semifinals of the division tournaments yesterday will play in the OIA individual tournament tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the University of Hawai'i courts.

Semifinals: Jeremy Young (Mililani) def. Andrew Enomoto (Pearl City) 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); Tho Nguyen (Campbell) def. Brenton Arakaki ('Aiea) 6-4, 6-0.

BIIF BASEBALL

• Waiakea takes title: Eric Tao pitched a five-hitter as Waiakea captured the Big Island Interscholastic Federation baseball title and a state tournament berth with an 8-0 victory over Konawaena yesterday.

In another BIIF game, Morgan Kruger-Burgess pitched a one-hitter as Kealakehe upset Hilo 5-1, giving St. Joseph the other BIIF berth in the state tournament, which starts Friday.

Tao allowed five hits and no walks. The senior right-hander struck out six and pitched his way out of trouble several times, stranding seven men on base.


MIL BASEBALL

• Baldwin in state tournament: Tyson Higa pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Baldwin to a 7-0 victory over Moloka'i for the Maui Interscholatic League baseball championship contest and a berth in next week's state tournament.

Moloka'i beat Maui 7-6 earlier yesterday to reach the title game.


KIF BASEBALL

• Waimea advances: Waimea broke open a 2-all tie with seven runs in the last three innings to eliminate Kapa'a 9-4 yesterday in a Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation semifinal at Hanap«p«.

Third baseman Leonard Zalopany scored four runs and drove in two runs with two doubles to lead WaimeaÊinto the league championship game Tuesday against the Kaua'i (5-1).


BIIF BASKETBALL

• Kona upsets Waiakea: Enjoli Izumi Baltero scored 18 points and Nancy Hoist 17 to lift Konawaena to a 59-55 upset of defending champion Waiakea in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball tournament semifinals.

Honoka'a defeated Hilo 63-46 in the other semifinal.

Konawaena and Honoka'a meet Tuesday for the BIIF title and a berth in the state tournament, which begins Friday.
