A 52-year-old man was in serious condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center yesterday after being struck by a car on Saturday.

Ellery Eleneki of Kihei remained in the intensive-care unit yesterday, a nursing supervisor said.

He was injured Saturday evening while trying to help direct a driver onto South Kihei Road from Mai Poina Oe Iau State Park, police said. Eleneki was standing in the south-bound lane when a car being driven by a 72-year-old man struck him.

Hanalei asked to curb trash

HANALEI, Kaua'i — Residents on the north shore are being asked to limit the trash they bring to the Hanalei refuse transfer station, pending repairs to a waste hopper.

The county is using a rubbish collection truck to accept trash while the hopper is down. The problem appears to be electrical and may take two weeks to repair, officials said.

Residents are being asked to take loads larger than a trash barrel or two to other refuse transfer stations or the Kekaha landfill.
