Military Appreciation Week, an extended observance that is ongoing through May 26, was established in 1985 by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i to recognize the military's contribution to the security of the Pacific region, as well as the economic well-being of the state.
The Bishop Museum will offer a special Military Day for service families on Sunday.
"It is our way of saying mahalo for all that they do," said Charles Ota, military affairs director for the Chamber of Commerce.
At a ceremony at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the mayor's office in City Hall, the Hawai'i Armed Services YMCA will present a "Five-Star Salute" to recognize junior enlisted people who made outstanding contributions to their communities: Army Spc. Theodore Chandler, Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John A. Burns, Marine Sgt. Jeremy Hinkhouse, Air Force Airman 1st Class Linsie F. Wolf and Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Marvin O. Ross.
