Kaua'i's Ballard second in Tahiti surf

Kaua'i surfer Rochelle Ballard placed second in the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday in 3- to 5-foot waves at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Ballard was defeated by world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the one-on-one final. Beachley led the 35-minute final from start to finish, tallying 16.75 points to Ballard's 12.9.

Beachley, the three-time defending world champion, opened the final with consecutive rides that received scores of 5.25 each. Ballard could never make up the difference, with her top-scoring wave receiving a 5.0.

Beachley earned $10,000 for the victory and moved into the No. 1 ranking on the women's World Championship Tour. Ballard received $6,000 and climbed to No. 2 overall.

Earlier in the day, Ballard dominated both her quarterfinal and semifinal heats, eliminating Australian Melanie Redman and Brazil's Tita Tavares, respectively.

Another Kaua'i surfer, Keala Kennelly, was eliminated in the semifinals by Beachley. Kennelly, who was the defending champion of the event, received $4,000.

Waialua's Megan Abubo, who was ranked No. 1 prior to the contest, was eliminated in the second round. The men did not run heats yesterday.

Quarterback Club

• Mortimer honored: The Honolulu Quarterback Club will honor University of Hawai'i president Kenneth Mortimer with a tribute at its weekly meeting today.

Mortimer will step down in July.

UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida and UH football coach June Jones are among those scheduled to speak.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda ballroom.

GOLF

• Warrior in regional: University of Hawai'i sophomore Scott Carlyle will compete in the NCAA West Regional at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., starting Thursday.

Carlyle is UH's lone representative in the 141-player field. The tournament consists of three 18-hole rounds.
