Mililani's Krystal Hangai, finally out from under the shadow of former teammate and four-time state champion Erin Hoe, won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls singles tennis championship yesterday at the University of Hawai'i courts.

Hangai "kept the ball on the court" with her ground strokes and waited for Farrington's Wailyn Leong to make errors, which inevitably happened as the Trojan senior won, 6-1, 6-3.

Farrington junior Anthony Ilagan won the boys singles championship over Mililani's Jeremy Young, 6-3, 6-4.

Doubles crowns are being worn today by 'Aiea's Bryce Kawabe and Arthur Phanpengdy, and Pearl City's Nicole Sakai and Kellie Crail.

All of yesterday's players, including the third-place combatants, fly to Kaua'i on Saturday for the state championships.

Ilagan says his goal is to win states, although he acknowledges that it will take "my 'A' game of 'em all" to beat top seed Ikaika Jobe of Punahou.

Ilagan is ranked sixth in the Hawai'i Pacific Tennis Association 18 singles and Jobe has owned No. 1 for two years.
