Perfect ride lifts Dorian in Tahiti surf

Advertiser Staff

Shane Dorian of Kailua-Kona posted the highest scores of the day, including a perfect 10, to lead a group of five Hawai'i surfers into the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo yesterday in 4- to 6-foot waves at Teahupoo, Tahiti.

Dorian's three-wave total of 25.5 (out of 30) was the highest of the third round. He also recorded the only 10 of the day for a long barrel ride in his victory over Australian Kieran Perrow.

World champion Sunny Garcia, brothers Andy and Bruce Irons, and Kalani Robb were the other Hawai'i surfers advancing yesterday.

Garcia gained a measure of revenge by eliminating Tahiti's Nicolas Leetham. In the first round, Leetham upset Garcia.

Bruce Irons, who qualified for the contest through a separate trials event, upset Australian Luke Egan yesterday. Irons caught three waves in the closing minutes to eliminate Egan by one-tenth of a point (20.5-20.4).

All five Hawai'i surfers are now among the final 16 still in contention for the $30,000 top prize.
