HPU graduation to be worldwide event

By Vicki Viotti

A simulated depiction shows HPU's graduation via Web-casting from Pixelworld Networks. The webcast is visible at speeds as slow as 28.8 kbps.
Fernanda Pegas is thrilled that her mother will watch her receive a bachelor's degree in environmental studies tomorrow during Hawai'i Pacific University's graduation exercises. But the mammoth cost of traveling from their home in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, kept her dad from making the trip himself.

But her father will see her graduate: He'll attend the virtual ceremony on the Web. HPU has hired Island Web-casting firm Pixelworld Networks to broadcast the commencement at 6 p.m. tomorrow from its site (www.pixelworld.com/hpu/); there's also a link from the university site (www.hpu.edu).

To see the webcast, you need version 4.0 or later of either Internet Explorer or Netscape, and the Windows or Mac version of Windows Media Player needs to be installed. The Mac version has been notoriously balky, but ours ran well with the player that came with Internet Explorer 5, Macintosh edition.

Pixelworld has tested its network with Internet service providers in Japan at speeds as slow as 28.8 kbps, although faster connections are always best. But Pegas' father is happy to be able to see the video at any speed. "He's going to put the alarm on," she said. "He's going to have my sister and some friends come over. It'll be 1:30 a.m. there."

Those must be true friends.
