WINDWARD

Pounders likely to be expanded

The city could add as many as four Windward beach-front parcels to its park department if negotiations and condemnations are successful.

Recently at the recommendation of City Council member Steve Holmes, the city has initiated negotiations with a private land-owner to purchase property adjacent to La'ie Beach Park, commonly known as Pounders.

The tax map key for the property is 5-5001:51.

The vacant lot bordering the Kane'ohe side of the beach park is about three acres and has been for sale, said Holmes. Pounders is about 4.5 acres.

"If acquired, this contiguous parcel would enhance the existing beach park and its ability to provide recreational access for the public," said Holmes, Windward representative.

Holmes also requested that the city proceed with condemnation to obtain three lots in Punalu'u that belong to Kamehameha Schools. The city has tried to negotiate a land swap for the properties for about six years but has been unable to reach an equitable exchange, he said.

The lots are across the street from Kaluanui subdivision, Holmes said. The tax map keys for the properties are 5-3-009: 20, 44 and 46. Parcels 20 and 46 are adjacent to each other and 44 is three parcels north of the other two. The lots are too narrow to build and be able to meet the required setbacks. Parcels 44 and 46 are vacant and 20 has a boarded-up home.

Model airplane contest Sunday

Teams of radio-controlled aircraft will challenge one another in a contest to build and fly a model plane in 45 minutes beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kawai Nui Model Airpark on Quarry Road in Kailua.

The Aloha State Radio Control Club is sponsoring the event and will give each team the same materials to build their model. No one will know what the materials are, so no prior preparation can be done.

The event is free and open to the public.

Army to haul derelict vehicle

An Army crew will remove an abandoned vehicle left to rust along the Leeward shoreline near Kaena Point at about 10 a.m. today.

Soldiers from the 17th Corps Support Battalion, 25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army Hawai'i will remove the vehicle about a quarter-mile from the end of the paved road at Keawa'ula Beach. The soldiers will use a hoist and lift the car onto a flatbed truck.

"The soldiers are here to do our part in keeping the island clean," maintenance officer Capt. Charlie Slosson said. "We are committed in preserving the environment with our neighbors on the Leeward Coast."
