Kaua'i, Waimea, Honoka'a champions

Kaua'i High's baseball team and Waimea's girls basketball team will represent the Garden Island in state high school championship tournaments starting Friday on O'ahu.

Robyn Ho'opii-Manuel led all scorers with 23 points as Waimea upset first-round champion Kaua'i, 60-48, last night at Kaua'i High gym. Both were 4-2 during the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation season.

Kamanu Grace and Levi Rapozo hit two-run triples and Mark Rodrigues pitched an outstanding game as Kaua'i's Red Raiders beat Waimea, 6-2, to win the baseball championship and state tournament berth.

Kaua'i's baseball team will play O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kailua Friday at 6 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.

The Waimea basketball team will play the OIA champion at 7 p.m. at McKinley High. The OIA championship game will be played tonight.

BIIF BASKETBALL

• Honoka'a champs: Junior Erika Tadio scored 26 points as the Honoka'a Dragons defeated Konawaena, 67-50, before a near-capacity crowd of about 650 last night to win the Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball championship and state tournament berth.

Enjoli Izumi-Baltero led Konawaena with 24 points.

Honoka'a will play Iolani in the opening round of the state tournament at 8:30 Friday night at McKinley High.
